When planning a home renovation, one of the most commonly asked questions is: Which comes first – refinish floors or paint walls? The truth is that it can be done either way with success, so long as you plan accordingly and choose skilled, well-prepared professionals for both jobs. At Roman Paint Pros, we have experience painting both before and after flooring is newly installed or refinished. Read on to learn more about how we do it.

Which Comes First: Refinish Floors or Paint Walls?

To determine the timeline that makes the most sense for your personal home improvement project, there’s a lot to consider. The right order can vary depending on the specifics of your plan. For instance:
  • If having your walls painted or repainted is a somewhat higher priority for you than revitalizing your floors, you might call in our crew first. In this case, it’s important to be aware that your newly painted walls are bound to take on some marks and dust when the floors are done. The good news is that our experts will return to provide touchup services within a reasonable time frame, so it’s fine to have us paint first if your floors will be done not long after. As an important note here, any significant gouges in the walls should be covered by the flooring company.
  • If you opt instead to have your floors upgraded ahead of painting, just keep in mind that they’ll need time to cure (which can take several days, depending on the floor type). And once they’ve cured, you definitely don’t want to risk getting splatters of paint on them. This is where drop cloths come in! Our team has plenty of experience effectively using this tool to protect beautiful floors while we prime and paint.
As you can see, with the proper precautions, tools and attention to detail, flooring and painting work may be done in either order without issue. At Roman Paint Pros, we’re always happy to provide advice on which comes first – refinish floors or paint walls – for best results under particular circumstances.
