Nail Holes Simply applying paint over nail holes does not solve the moisture issues. By painting over the hole, you're allowing a small pocket for water to sit. Moisture sits in nail holes around the house damaging your siding. When nail holes begin to swell due to moisture, the hole must be caulked to fill the entire hole. This creates an even surface for moisture to run off of rather than laying in there breaking down the paint.
